Shelters
Contact Information and Helplines in Finland
Immigrants are entitled to municipal social and health services including services offered by shelters, if the residence permit for Finland is valid or has been valid for at least one year, the immigrant is registered in the population register of his or her domicile, and has been given a social security number and Kela-card. The shelter may be maintained by your domicile or a service bought by the municipality from a family shelter association.
A family shelter provides short-term refuge for those experiencing violence in their intimate relationship if staying at home is impossible or actually dangerous because of violence, threats or fear. The personnel of the shelter support the client in solving the crisis.
The family shelter services of the member associations of the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters will take into account all parties to the domestic violence case. The basis for the work is securing the child's interest in all circumstances. Most of the shelters offer services round the clock. All parties to domestic violence may call the shelter. You can talk about your situation on the phone and get contact information for those who can help you. Helpline services are offered mainly in Finnish.
